Chetco Area Fire

A fire is now raging in the above area. A few years ago a truck-load of forest workers observed a bigfoot in the area of this bridge. A police officer was called and he also observed the animal walking toward him on this bridge. . He fired his gun and it moved quickly off the bridge and  into the brush. Also this is near the area where Bill Emery and team observed a bigfoot  and their trail cam snapped photos. Also the Columbus Day animal was found not far from this area. Since a fire is in the area, bigfoots may be running and could be harmed. If you should hear of a bigfoot sighting or body found, please let us know. Comment please.

Chetco River in Ivan T. Sanderson's Book.

The following excerpt from the book, Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life by Ivan T. Sanderson. It is one of my favorite bigfoot books. It mentions the Chetco River, I assume it is the same river area where Cory had his sighting.

This would be in the year 1890 at a place on the Chetco River about the border between California and Oregon It appears that about that date and thereabouts, the citizenry had been bothered for some time by really gigantic foot racks that looked, according to the contemporary records, just like those that would be left by enormous naked human feet, which passed back and forth from the forests to the seashore. Then things began to happen at a mining camp some 50 miles inland. Large objects were moved at night and there were unpleasant noises, all naturally attributed to marauding bears, until one fine morning when, after a particularly rambunctious night, during which somebody fired at something, two sets of large human-type tracks showed up all around the camp. A posse was organized and tracked these for a long way into the forest but eventually gave up. A short time later, however, a man was chased into camp by something very large, the looks of which he did not wait to investigate. A watch was set: two men at a time, for a few hours each. Then it happened.

One couple going to relieve a watch found their two companions dead and really grossly mutilated. They had in fact been literally smashed and apparently by being picked up and slammed repeatedly onto the ground so that they looked as if they had fallen off a high cliff onto rocks.

Dates Wrong in Older Blog

Interesting story, but the year is wrong...In 1844 there were very few whites & no railroads yet in Oregon. The first wagon trains had not even started..The Chetco killings were in the 1890s which leads me to believe that the years of the described killings was 1894..

In 1844 David Hamlin a railroad employee for The Oregon Pacific Railway. found himself embroiled in a mystery. 3 employees had been found dead by Hamlin near what is now Glendale,Oregon of an apparent animal of unusual size and strength. the men were found torn to pieces from some unknown beast. Workers reported they found barefoot tracks of 19" and more all around the bodies. Hamlin then hired trackers to track this beast down and kill it, but to no avail. Trackers reported that they followed the big tracks for over 4 day's only to lose them in a heavy rain storm. The beast was never found and Hamlin was fired by the railroad. One year later the Chetco Monster began a rampage. The Chetco and Glendale sites were only 120 mile apart. Could it have been the same ill tempered beast, who knows ,but it's food for thought.

More on Date

The date could be wrong but the first railroad that came to Oregon was in 1840. SS&T had a timber rail
up to present day Roseburg to haul lumber down to SF Cal.

The Old Days of Bigfoot

Back in 1958 Bigfoot was just another legend that was talked about around the Indian community. Then in 1958 Gerry Crew found large footprints on a new timber access road in Northern California.

Back then most people had never heard of Sasquatch/Bigfoot. All of a sudden people saw newscasts about Bigfoot and the craze was on. But the actual hunt for this elusive creature goes back to the early 18 hundreds.

In 1844 David Hamlin a railroad employee for the Oregon Pacific Railway found himself embroiled in a mystery.

Three employees had been found dead by Hamlin near what is now Glendale, Oregon of an apparent animal of unusual size and strength. The men were found torn to pieces from some unknown beast. Workers reported they found barefoot tracks of 19 inches and more all around the bodies.

Hamlin then hired trackers to track this beast down and kill it, but to no avail. Trackers reported that they followed the big tracks for over four days only to lose them in a heavy rain storm.

The beast was never found and Hamlin was fired by the railroad. One year later the Chetco Monster began a rampage.

Thank you so much for this information. This is one of the things that worries me, when the police do not take these sightings seriously: What if a diseased animal causes a death or property damage? Isn't it best that a record of the sighting be available?

Gun Fired

Thanks for the chance to tell my story to someone. On December 14th 2009 while on patrol near Carpenderville in Curry Co. I received a call to proceed to mile post twenty four on the Forest Service Road, Pairsoll Peak near the south fork of the Chetco River.

At 1422 hrs I arrived at the south fork bridge. There I was to investigate a report by cellphone that six loggers in a crew wagon had seen a big animal of unknown species on the bridge looking over the side. After taking their reports I told them they could go on home.

I walked across the bridge on foot and walked along the road looking for any signs. There it was, a blackish hairy animal of immense size standing upright looking straight at me from the river bank. I drew my weapon and shot once in the air to stop its forward movement towards me.

The eight to ten foot apelike thing whirled around and walked off into the treeline near the water. Stunned, I returned to pickup. I called it in and was told to return to the Gold Beach Station. I had no choice but to report seeing a Sasquatch-Bigfoot type animal.

I had to see a goof ball shrink before going back to work
