From the Port Orford Weekly News. The strange looking animal found dead after the windstorm of October is still a mystery nearly three months later. Dave Allen of Griffy and Laird Logging based out of Gold Beach said a crew found the animal while cutting windfall trees from Greyback Road near O' Brien in November.
Allen said the crew approached the animal thinking it was a bear killed by a large Douglas Fir that split apart during the hurricane force winds on October 12,1962. Allen said only after the lead faller-cutter Kenneth Watts walked around the tree they discovered that the animal had hands and feet like a human.
Allen said Watts was shocked at the size of the animal. Allen explained the animal was something between animal, ape and human and mostly covered in a matted like black fur or hair. The odor of the animal was said to be unbearable.
The crew measured the body at over seven feet in height guessing the weight around six to eight hundred pounds. Allen arrived at the location about two hours after the discovery. Allen took five photos of the animal before the forest service arrived.
The forest service had the animal removed after directing the crew to leave the area and work on a secondary spur road closer to Highway 199. It was the next day the supervisor from the forest service called the Gold Beach office and demanded that Allen turn over all photos of the animal.
Wilfred Laird told the authority that Watts was directed by him to take the photos for possible insurance reasons. The supervisor insisted they hand over all photos of the animal or face possible monetary penalties. It was only that Laird agreed to turn over all the photos to the Gold Beach Ranger District.
Laird explained that they threaten to hold up all payment to his company and ban him from any further contracts. A call on Monday to the district office where they refused any comment to what the animal eventually was identified as.
